Curriculum: Greeting Songs

Every class starts with a song that acknowledges each child individually.  Singing hello to every child is a wonderful way to acknowledge his/her presence as an individual and as a member of the group.  In the beginning of the semester, we will alternate the accompanying movements as we sing hello.  Clapping, waving, pointing, and tapping are just some examples.  As you probably know, toddler-hood is the time of physical exploration and development, and these are just a few examples of the many accompanying motions that are popular among young children.

After a few weeks now, the children have warmed up to the activities and the environment, and now I ask him/her how he/she would like to be greeted.  Many children, particularly the young ones, respond with the motion of clapping, tapping, pointing, etc. instead of responding verbally.  Rather than immediately copying your child as I might with a toddler, I will ask him/her what we usually call that motion, capitalizing upon the three-year-old’s interest in language.  Upon hearing the answer, I will repeat it to the class saying, “Let’s tap hello to Evan.”  By singing “Come on everyone, tap with Evan” all the while tapping on our knees, we are all reinforcing your child’s verbal understanding, pairing the appropriate label, which may be new to some children, with the already familiar movement.   This is also giving your child the opportunity to direct the actions of the entire class through the use of language…what a powerful message this simple activity provides!

Just another positive part of the Musikgarten curriculum that reinforces our kids in so many ways!  It is such a neat program!  I love teaching it!

About Musikgarten

Musikgarten is an early-childhood program that teaches children music the way they learn language.  It begins with listening and experimentation and then invites the children to naturally join in as they develop.  The classes progress from babies through early elementary school, teaching them first to understand and create music and then teaching them how to read it and write it; just like we do language.

I currently teach the preschool curriculum, Cycle of Seasons, intended for ages 3-5.  I have also created a preschool program to coincide  with the Musikgarten curriculum.

For your young child every day is new, fresh, exciting, filled with new people, things, and events.  Events that appear ordinary to us as adults are a never-ending source of wonder and engagement for the child.  With no sense of time but the present, your child lives each moment completely.  The smallest happening is a momentous event!

This year, in The Cycle of Seasons, we are taking delight in the discovery of the world around us with all of our senses.  We imagine and create.  We are learning to focus listening skills to recognize and discriminate between different sounds.   We are learning about the language of music, patterns and songs, dances and stories.    Your child will begin to build a musical vocabulary.  Your child’s ear – a vital organ of learning – is at a crucial point of development, and The Cycle of Seasons provides a rich, fun, musical, magical environment in which this development can take place!

Class Schedule: Fall 2011

I am just opening my Musikgarten program and currently offer Cycle of Seasons, the preschool Musikgarten curriculum.  My program is two days each week.

Tuesdays from 10:00-10:45 - Group Musikgarten Class

This 45-minute class is for both parent and child to attend together.  We will be using purely Musikgarten curriculum exploring the beauties of the world around us through music, movement, imagination, and poems.  Significantly younger siblings are welcome to attend for free,  participating siblings will be half tuition.

Thursdays from 10:00- 12:00* - Musikgarten Preschool Day

This 2-hour preschool class will explore the Musikgarten curriculum.  We will also add basic introduction to letter learning, art, science exploration, gross and fine motor skill development, and interactive play.

*It was recently brought to my attention that this time may conflict with Kindergarten pick-up for older siblings.  I am willing to change the time if participants do have a conflict.  Perhaps 9:30-11:30 on Thursdays.

You are encouraged to attend both classes each week, but you may enroll in just the Musikgarten Group Class if scheduling conflicts exist.

Classes are scheduled to begin on September 20th.  Enrollment will remain open until classes are full.
*Pleast note: This is a change from the printed date on many of my materials.
